Born a sprightly Quaker farm girl in the North Carolina wilderness, Dolley Payne became a wife, a mother, and soon a grieving young widow as yellow fever decimated her family. Then fate led her to James Madison, father of the Constitution, a future president, and the dearest love of her life. “Our hearts understand each other,” she wrote to him in 1805. Four years later, Madison was elected president and Dolley became the nation’s “Presidentress,” for the term “First Lady” had yet to be invented.

Her enthusiasm was infectious. When eminent statesman Henry Clay exclaimed, “Everybody loves Mrs. Madison,” she responded, “That’s because Mrs. Madison loves everybody!” Dolley’s immense warmth, effervescence, tact, and popularity were acknowledged even by her husband’s political opponents. In 1808, Federalist presidential candidate Charles C. Pinckney lamented, “I was beaten by Mr. and Mrs. Madison. I might have had a better chance had I faced Mr. Madison alone.”

The personal heroism she displayed when the British attacked Washington during the War of 1812, and the courage and integrity that characterized her entire life, made her an extraordinary role model. By the time of her death at the age of eighty-one in 1849, she was one of the most-acclaimed, most-loved women in nineteenth-century America. Based on more than 2,000 of Dolley Payne Todd Madison’s letters, this intimate portrait explores the mind, heart, and brave journey of a vivacious, dedicated woman, who triumphed over adversity, poverty, and tragedy to help build the new American republic and define the role of First Lady of the land.

The 6″ x 9″ book is based chiefly on primary source documents, notably Dolley’s own correspondence. It features 464 pages; acid-free, eye-ease paper; 91 illustrations and maps; James Madison and Dolley Payne family trees; a bibliography; extensive source notes; and a full name and subject index.

The Dallas Cowboys Ring of Honor was a ring around Texas Stadium in Irving, Texas and currently around Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas which honors former players, coaches and club officials who made outstanding contributions to the Dallas Cowboys football organization. The RoH began on November 23, 1975, which was designated in Dallas as Bob Lilly Day. On that day, at what was considered the first Cowboys Reunion, the team unveiled Lilly’s name and jersey number beneath the press box during half time. As the first honoree, Lilly donned his Cowboy uniform once more and graciously accepted the honor, along with numerous other gifts, which included a car, a gun and a hunting dog. Also present at the historic event were Cowboys owner Clint Murchison, president/general manager Tex Schramm and Head Coach Tom Landry. As the first inductee, Lilly has the added distinction of returning to present each new member in the RoH. Only nine players received the honor during the first three decades of the Cowboys existence, making the RoH a coveted accolade, true to the dream envisioned by Schramm, its creator.

More info: The Gator Football Ring of Honor is Florida’s alternative to retiring a player’s number and pays homage to the greatest former players and coaches. Physically, it is a ring displayed on the North Endzone façade of Ben Hill Griffin Stadium displaying the names of the players and coaches who have contributed greatly to the Florida Gators football team. It was created in 2006 in commemoration of 100 years of Florida Football and unveiled before the kickoff of the Alabama game that season. The four initial inductees to the Ring of Honor were Emmitt Smith, Steve Spurrier, Danny Wuerffel, and Jack Youngblood.

ROH currently runs several wrestling shows each month throughout the midwest and on the east coast of North America. It has also held shows on the west coast, in the United Kingdom, Japan and Canada. Annual shows include the “Anniversary Show(s)”, “Supercard of Honor”, “Death Before Dishonor”, “Glory by Honor”, and “Final Battle” (the last show of the calendar year).
